We drove from Vegas to a spot smack in the middle of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon and a multitude of other gorgeous places. This was, by far, the most spectacular scenery upon which my eyes have ever gazed. If you ever get the chance, go there. If you can go tomorrow, pack up some sandwiches and hit the road. Who cares about the job or that leak under the sink. You won’t regret it. Trust me.
By the way, no one fell into the Grand Canyon, and yes, the possibility of falling in was ever-present at the back of my mind as we walked around. I just read a news article today about some poor guy who fell in recently trying to get a picture. I used to read these stories and balk wondering how anyone could accidently fall into the largest canyon in the world. I mean, do they really need to post signs around the park, “Warning: Try Not to Fall In”? Isn’t that a God-given instinct we all have… to avoid falling into a gargantuan canyon?
But having been there, oh man, I can see people falling in. You walk around with dozens of other picture-taking people who are casually cutting it close to the edge and it makes you think, “hey, this can’t be dangerous ‘cause the guy in the Hawaiian shirt and flip-flops doesn’t look worried.” It’s a false sense of security that sets it. What they should post around the canyon is this: “Even though you see schmucks walking near the edge, stay away and be safe. Eventually they will fall in.”
Here are a handful of pictures out of the 50-billion we took:
This was taken on the drive to the area around the Grand Canyon. It was an amazing drive! |
There wasn’t a moment without being dazzled by the surroundings. (Okay, maybe the moment when Clara peed through her diaper, but other than that, were dazzled the whole time!) |
More dazzlement. |
And more. |
The kids were so dazzled, they were overcome with exhaustion. |
Our RV park was in a small town in Kanab County. The kids picked a huge bag of ripened apricots from a tree outside our door, and we were shaded by an almond tree. (The almonds were not ripe – we want a refund!) |
The next day were drove to the Canyon. On our way, we stopped to look back at the view as we climbed up in elevation. |
We bought a National Parks pass a while ago, so no fees for us! |
Walking around to the viewing area. The kids wanted to walk in the brush on the left side of the path where the drop off to the canyon is also conveniently located. Isn’t that cute? |
One of 5-hundred billion quintillion pictures we took ‘cause there aren’t enough images of the Grand Canyon for people to see. |
Okay, you had to be there to understand, but this couple was perched, like, on the edge and chatting about where to go for lunch. If one of them seriously didn’t want to eat a hamburger again, one little push would have taken care of things. |
There was a lovely chalet with artists and music. See that guy lying on the wall? People lose all sense of danger around here – see what I mean?! |
And here’s Niagara Falls. Just kidding! |
You guessed it. |
My beautiful chipmunks. Apologies to the Canyon, but they are way more breathtaking to me. |
Sophia trying not to fall and get a good picture to boot. She succeeded. |
On the drive back we passed this amazingly huge field of grass. Bella’s comment: “Who mows this?” |
Zion National Park in their Sunday’s best… except for Clara who was sans pants at the moment. |
So cool. |
Don’t they look like angels descending from Heaven? |
