Setting Sail to Spokane

clara-on-chair Tomorrow we are launching this beast for our first lengthy drive, across the state of Washington; and if all goes well, staying our first night on the road in Spokane. This means we will have to stay somewhere tomorrow night. (See how logical I am?) So today I’ve called a few RV parks around the area for a one-night stay and the prices they’ve quoted have caused me to think about “boondocking” since it’s just one night.

What is boondocking exactly? Well, I’m glad you asked me and not my husband who keeps calling it “dry-docking,” which is incorrect and I believe is a term boating people use. (Uh, honey, we’re RV people and NOT boat people!) I think he’s combining boon-docking with dry-camping … which are two terms intimately related to each other, but not quite the same thing.

What’s dry-camping you might wonder? Dry camping is camping sans any hook-ups.

Uh, “hook-ups”?

Hook-ups are utilities that some campsites offer, so you can plug in your electricity, water, cable, phone, and you usually have access to a dump site.

Dump site? “What’s that,” you ask?

Exactly my point. RVing is a whole other world with its own lingo and code words and ancient wisdom passed onto one RVer to another by light of a propane stove-top. Eighty-percent of stuff we’ve learned has been from friends and nice people who’ve jumped in and offered to help. And, golly-gee-whiz, did we need help!

That reminds me of something: Thank you, Howard! If it weren’t for you during those first few days, we’d either be separated or someone would be dead.

We cannot forget our friends, Dave and Kelly, either. Their guidance early on has proven to be invaluable. Without their example of a happy homeschooling family living on the road, I’m not sure I would think it possible.
