Automated Safety Hitch

The coolest thing ever. I hope.

Sooooo, you know that we’re driving a 1-ton van as our tow vehicle and we plan to buy a fifth wheel. How is this possible? Well, someone at RV.net casually mentioned this device, called an Automated Safety Hitch, which can enable your van or SUV (or a truck hitch) to tow a fifth wheel. What really enticed me, though, is the towing and safety enhancements it offers. Pulling is supposed to be easier, safer, better all-around, in addition to increasing your tow vehicle’s pulling capacity. (It has it’s own brakes, too.)

In the industrial world of big rigs, this is known as a “drop axle” dolly or something like that. So the concept is well-tested in those circles, but is relatively new in RV circles. We will be one of many pioneers, I think, for this contraption. I just hope that it’s as cool as I think it is. We haven’t met anyone using one or even seen one on the road. (Above is a picture of it in action.)

It will be a few weeks (about three) before it arrives, so I’ll have more information about it then. I figure this would be a good opportunity to kind of review it online for those of you who are curious. It’s a sizable investment, but if it’s as great as I think it is, it will be worth it. Wish us luck.

You seriously could write a book! I love your site and could inundate you with so many questions, also would like to comment on your writing style it’s wonderful. I am serious about you and your family visiting Granite Mountain Outfitters, however you should plan on staying for at least a week it’s beautiful country. We will go for a ride in the high country!

Thank you, Sue! My first comment and it’s not spam. Even better, it’s a compliment! The site is in its infancy, but will grow and blossom soon. Stay tuned!

Dear Melanie and family,

Gayle and I are so proud of you guys following your hearts like this! As you know Gayle and I had a motor home and traveled around the country ourselves and only had to give it up due to back problems. We really miss it and will be following your travel blog with a lot of admiration (and perhaps a little envy!) May God guide you and keep you safe!

Love and Hugs to all,

JB and Gayle
