Sooooo, you know that we’re driving a 1-ton van as our tow vehicle and we plan to buy a fifth wheel. How is this possible? Well, someone at RV.net casually mentioned this device, called an Automated Safety Hitch, which can enable your van or SUV (or a truck hitch) to tow a fifth wheel. What really enticed me, though, is the towing and safety enhancements it offers. Pulling is supposed to be easier, safer, better all-around, in addition to increasing your tow vehicle’s pulling capacity. (It has it’s own brakes, too.)
In the industrial world of big rigs, this is known as a “drop axle” dolly or something like that. So the concept is well-tested in those circles, but is relatively new in RV circles. We will be one of many pioneers, I think, for this contraption. I just hope that it’s as cool as I think it is. We haven’t met anyone using one or even seen one on the road. (Above is a picture of it in action.)
It will be a few weeks (about three) before it arrives, so I’ll have more information about it then. I figure this would be a good opportunity to kind of review it online for those of you who are curious. It’s a sizable investment, but if it’s as great as I think it is, it will be worth it. You seriously could write a book! I love your site and could inundate you with so many questions, also would like to comment on your writing style it’s wonderful. I am serious about you and your family visiting Granite Mountain Outfitters, however you should plan on staying for at least a week it’s beautiful country. We will go for a ride in the high country!
